Meet the Cumbrian Makers: Lauren Frost

Author: Langdale Chase

Our afternoon tea is inspired by the beautiful landscape that surrounds us. An inspiration for writers, poets and artists, which to this day inspires local craftspeople. When setting out to create our fabulous afternoon tea, we wanted to showcase how the landscape continues to inspire. We met Lauren Frost, a ceramicist from Penrith who has created our beautiful ramekins, find out more about Lauren and her ramekins below.

What got you into ceramics?

I first started creating ceramics when I was in sixth form, back in 2015. There was a potters wheel at the edge of the classroom that I never saw used, but I’d always wanted to have a go! Once I’d started I found the process really fascinating, and despite not having knowledge of the correct techniques I stuck at it and ended up studying ceramics to a degree level. I was hooked! I graduated from the National Glass Centre in Sunderland with a first class degree in 2020.

Since graduating, lockdown happened, which gave me the opportunity to really focus on starting up as a ceramicist, basing myself in a studio on the edge of Penrith. I really want to do more teaching so watch this space *smiles*.

What made you want to teach?

Whilst I was at university I did quite a bit of teaching, with schools and at a gallery. Since coming back to Cumbria I’ve had the opportunity to teach in schools as well. I find it’s a really nice way of sharing my passion for this craft, seeing people be as excited as I was when I first started out. *smiles* I find it very fulfilling to teach as well as create my own work.

How does the Lakes inspire you?

The Lake District is a constant inspiration to me and my work really. I’ve grown up here, and I try and get outside whenever I can. I love walking and climbing in the hills, kayaking and swimming in the lakes. I find that time away from the studio helps me to find inspiration to create new designs.

For the ramekins in the Afternoon Tea, I’ve painted on the layers using a process called Slip Decoration. It’s basically a combination of liquid clay and powdered oxides/stains which I apply whilst pieces are still spinning on the wheel. When developing my unique style I found that I really loved this painterly technique. How I can depict the layers of the Lakeland landscape through different colours.

How did you turn the Langdale Chase brief into your ramekins?

Initially, I saw the mood boards and chatted with the team. I was following the Amazon’s theme, so focused on darker tones and details. Swallows and Amazons was actually one of my favourite books when I was little, so places I was thinking of whilst creating the pieces included the “Amazon River”, and “Octopus Lagoon”, which led to the watery layering and the engraved trees motif. I also took inspiration from the lake you see from Langdale Chase.
